課程概述 |
To introduce concepts of loss, grief, bereavement, mourning and the development of grief counseling. Hopefully, students can learn to sensitize themselves to the subject and expand their understanding of the grieving experience so they are more prepared with personal and future professional challenges in facing such issues in health related or other settings.
The course is designed to offer:
(A)Experiential learning: arrangement of a 1 full day workshop and/or 2 night workshop to allow students to review their loss history and examine the impact.
(B)Intellectual framework: Provide an overview on the subject of bereavement, grief and loss.
(C)Small group discussion/interaction/support to facilitate milieu for learning and adaptation.
(D)Self-reflection, organizing losses in own life story, sharing through workshop, class discussion, assignments。
(E)Suggested film viewing and other children drawing books, music—loss/grief and the process of healing. Different types of loss, (“媽媽的臉” --財團法人中華民國(台灣)安寧照顧基金會,“被遺忘的時光-The Long Goodbye--interviewing demented patients and families” by 天主教失智老人基金會, or <阿嬤的秘密或蘆葦之歌>慰安婦阿嬤的記錄片。婦女救援基金會,”一首搖滾上月球”)
(F)Encourage open discussion and demonstrate the practice of being “present” plus active/supportive/reflecting/empathic listening which play very important roles in grief counseling
Content: adjustable as class proceeds according to students’ demands
I.
Week 1- 2
Introduction of course design, overview
Week 3 - 5 .
Workshop on Personal Loss History Review (dates to be decided)
Examine personal grief events, impact, adaptation, resources,

II.
Week 6-12
Understanding theoretical background/clinical sharing:
attachment/loss/grief, bio/psycho/cognitive/behavior reactions, stages/ mourning tasks/, normal/abnormal grief, goals/implications of grief counseling
Surviving specific types of loss:
surviving sudden losses, heart attack, stroke, car accident, etc, long term disability , change in relationship, disaster,
※ working with family grief
※ 3-4 Individual presentations in each class
III.
Week 12-17
Surviving specific types of loss:
traumatic death, disasters, psycho-social impact /interventions, masculine grief, childhood/adolescent bereavement
grief adaptation, professional’s own grief/compassion fatigue,
course evaluation
※ working with groups around issues of loss
※ group presentations arranged in each class

1.Assignment:
(A) Individual paper/class presentation-My loss history: due the second week of March (3000 words )
Review of at least 3 losses taken place in previous life, the event, age it happened, grief reaction, coping, outside resources that were helpful, the extent of impact at that time and now, any coping pattern noticed
(B) Group presentation-A book/movie/music in depth review (on grief, loss, process of healing): due the first week of May
Explain motivation in selecting the project item, analyzing the grieving process from Worden’s model, own feedback/learning/critique/
2.Evaluation:
(1) attendance / class participation / oral presentation of A 33 %
(2) 2 written assignments 66 %
